Frequently Asked Questions

Is releasing a tongue tie or lip tie a hype or a fad?

Releasing a tongue tie has been performed by physicians and midwives for many centuries. In the same period as artificial milk supplements became more easily available and of better quality, routinely releasing tongue tie stopped in babies. Physicians and dentists continued to release tongue and lip ties in older children and adults usually resulting in such severe speech impediments and gaps in the front teeth that surgical release was necessary. Rather than it being a hype, it is being diagnosed earlier in babies with functional problems in feeding and is often easier to be treated in a baby than an older child.
